DAWN 2020 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

DAWN 2020 featured THREE concurrent streams of programming that reimagined the Ten Commandments:

  • Reboot Signature Track: This Shavuot explosion is provided by some of the greatest artists and thinkers of the day. Be prepared for amazing multi-sensory programming and a whole lot of surprises and special guests.

  • The Jewish Emergent Network Track: Torah all night with some of the most progressive and mind expansive rabbis you can find. They hail from around the country and together we'll shelter at Sinai and rise up for revelation.

  • Eight Hours 'Round Midnight Track: A live 8-hour musical and spiritual performance by the acclaimed Grammy nominated jazz guitarist and composer John Schott. He’ll be there all night. You won’t want to miss it.

A momentous new score to Cecil B Demille's Ten Commandments Pt.1 by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Steven Drozd (Flaming Lips) and Scott Amendola.

Cecil B DeMille's first attempt at telling the Ten Commandments story was in the Silent era year of 1923. The film is broken up into two stories: the story of the Jewish Exodus from Egypt and a thinly related "present day" melodrama. Berlin, Drozd and Amendola are creating a new score for the Exodus tale, musically following Moses out of Egypt and into the Dessert where he receives the Ten Commandments!

2 Sides of the Same Cheesecake with Evan Wolkenstein and Gabi Moskowitz: Our most sacred scene: revelation at Sinai, shows the Israelites and God in a kind of mirroring dance, each echoing the other. What can we learn about intimacy and relationships from that -- and from a single cheesecake with two sides that are utterly different?

The Amtlai Meditation Session with Jill Soloway & Rabbi Amichai Lau-Lavie & Friends: Amtlai is the Goddess of the Future. This is Abraham's mother and she is upset that no one asks about her. Amtlai believes that the goddess of the future Jill and Amichai have an anti-plague amulet. Say her name and you will be free of the plague. Her message is that none of this would be happening if it weren't for the eating, warehousing and slaughtering of animals. Plant based or die. This disease is here to tell us this.

Drunk (and possibly stoned) History of Shavuot: Join Alex Grossman, Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove, and comedian Heather Pasternak for a very not sober history of Shavuot. Special guests include writer/comedian Joel Stein.

Eight Hours ‘Round Midnight: John Schott performs "Eight Hours 'Round Midnight,” a piece that was commissioned in 2004 by David Katznelson. Invoking the Jewish practices of textual commentary, interpretation, midrash, and intertextuality, he uses Thelonious Monk's 1942 composition Round Midnight as an all-night vehicle for an improvisatory "study session" on Shavuot. The 48 measure composition is stretched out over eight hours, each measure taking ten minutes, which forms the raw material that is turned over and over and examined from all angles.

How Would We Gather At Sinai Today? Priya Parker, author of The Art of Gathering, and Rabbi Shira Stutman (Sixth & I) discuss the power of holy gathering, how we’re virtually together now, and how we choose to gather moving forward.

Love in the Time of Corona: Join Acclaimed Israeli photographer Elinor Carucci and curator Maya Benton as they explore a bubbling theme: thou shalt not covet.

Scents and Shavuot: Join perfumers Yosh Han and Syd Buffman for “Scents + Shavuot” to gather flowers, greeneries and scents inspired by the imagery of the blooming flowers on Mt Sinai when the Torah was given to Moses.  We will share the spiritual meaning of botanicals through the lens of the Kabbalah and how to incorporate scented ritual into everyday life. Bring flowers, fruit, herbs or what you have in the house and we will create an offering together.

Silver Screen Studios Shavuot Edition: Some Jokes, Some Stories & Some Commandments to Live By As Told by Iconic Silver Screen Legends. Featuring Carl Reiner and Norman Lear.

Sunrise Sound Bath: Greet the morning sun and awaken your senses with our thirty minute sound meditation. Integrate your learnings, refuel your creative juices, and explore the outer limits of sound through the harmonic pure tones of Quartz Crystal Singing Bowls, a calming Ocean Wave Drum, and ethereal Koshi Chimes.

The World Premier of The Whole Cinemagillah! Created by Tiffany Shlain and Ken Goldberg, the film is a compilation of the most Jewish moments in TV and cinema.
