When the Nights Get Dark, We Light Them Up
DECEMBER 10 - 18, 2020
This Hanukkah, enjoy gifts of imagination from Reboot’s culture creators. We will offer quick bits of things to read, watch and hear - along with recommendations of places to give.
We asked our community to share the music, art and ideas giving them light right now. Each day, we will share those gifts with you in hopes you find your own light and pass it along.
8 nights. 8 sparks of Imagination. 8 places that need your light.
NIGHT 1 - A NEW LIGHT ON OLD FAVORITES
Hanukkah with its fried food, melting wax and 8 nights of dreidel is the best of Jewish messy and perfect for the kids at heart. To kick off our 8 nights, we visit the home of Karen Leibowitz and Anthony Myint, the Zero Foodprint cofounders, as they chop up Kung Pao Pastrami Latkes. After that, we get a great take on The Cat in the Hat, as A.J. Jacobs shares his perspective with our friends at Call Me Ishmael.
NIGHT 2 - DIXIE PLUS DREIDEL
Guitarist and vocalist Luther Dickinson and jazz musician Sharisse Norman, of the Grammy-nominated North Mississippi Allstars, welcome us to Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. Lighting the second night of candles, Luther and Sharisse ask us to “give light” to those suffering from loneliness, depression, homelessness and hunger. And, together they serve up some Dixie plus dreidel.
NIGHT 3 - The Light within
We are thrilled to bring you the work of Olivia Guterson and Laura Earle from Detroit to shine Hanukah’s 3rd night of lights on those families impacted by Covid-19.
NIGHT 4 - the most important least important thing
Roger Bennett of Men in Blazers fame, Reboot’s co-founder and former Hanukkah cynic shares how soccer - the most beautiful game - provided a new appreciation for what he long considered an overblown holiday.
NIGHT 5 - Lessons from the lockdown
“Lessons from the Lockdown" is an animation-meditation with music, words and pictures from Rebecca Odes and Christopher Noxon and inspiration and organization from Beth Karlin. The short film offers eight points of reflection to light our way through the darkness.
NIGHT 6 - THE MIRACLE OF SHAKESPEARE
Shakespeare scholar and actor, Dr. James Allen Jones, takes us into the mind of Shakespeare’s Othello. In this intimate moment, Dr. Jones draws a parallel between the miracle witnessed by Judah Maccabee in the beloved Hanukkah story, and the guidance given by the Duke of Venice to Othello in Shakespeare’s classic play. Both moments of revelation symbolized with the power of light.
NIGHT 7 - The weight of the world is love
Rooted to the earth by the light of the flame, with shooting stars fading in and out of the night sky, Laurie Anderson muses on light, its absence, and faith in its presence, even when sensed but not visible.
NIGHT 8 - We Believe… in science
Back by popular demand, the intergenerational power duo, Emmy Award-winning writer, director, producer Ann Druyan and her equally illuminating daughter, author Sasha Sagan join us for the 8th night of Hanukkah. On this night of miracles, they remind us of the awe and wonder of scientific discovery through the ages.

What does it mean to "Give Light?"
Reboot’s Give Light project re-imagines the concept of gift giving during Hanukkah as a time for art, community, and tikkun olam. The project asks people to consider how and why they "give light" to others throughout the year. It can mean giving time, talents, thoughts or money to causes you believe in. It may mean speaking up to injustice, supporting a friend or loved one in need - or something completely unique to you.
